In Order To Discover . . .

"In order to discover new lands, one must be willing to lose sight of the shore for a very long time."

Apply, Then Apply, Then . . .

Apply, then Apply and then Apply again. Why?  You've heard "The heard squeaky wheel gets the grease". Well that's one reason. Another equally important reason is that recruiters aren't really as organized as you'd think they might be.
Think two people: similar backgrounds and experience. One is hired simply because, when the recruiter started seriously reviewing ALL the resumes, one was higher in the pile!
If you see a position that's really you, persistence and tenacity can pay off.

Why Are You Looking?

Do you read Parade magazine? It's an insert in many Sunday Newspapers. Do you remember newspapers? Wow things have changed.

Anyway, in a recent Parade Magazine piece relating to their Parade.com/poll, when "readers" were asked: If you could do it all over again, would you chose the same career? 61 % said "No".   What do you think?  Is it an obvious lack of career satisfaction? Or is it something or someone else that's really behind the motivation to do something different?

How about you? Tired of the same old thing day in day out? Or is it the boss? Personally, I've most often always felt that people leave bosses, rather than jobs. What do you think?

So the final question: What's really motivating you to consider a change?

Tell us.

103,000 New Jobs, But . . .

The economy added 103,000 jobs in December. This was less than the 150,000 expected, yet the jobless rate dropped from 9.8% to 9.4 %.

Is The Axiom “Hire Slow” Still Valid?

I attended a Twin West Chamber of Commerce meeting this AM. Shared with them my belief that our economic future will be driven by Economic Development and its impact on Job Creation.

As a business owner and one who is closely associated with the need for increased collaboration in Economic and Workforce Development, businesses have to move forward and begin thinking more about how their reluctance (risk avoidance) to hire is a major obstacle to overcoming - and is actually extending - this prolonged "recovery".

I know there are practical (financial), as well as emotional and political reasons to "hire slow", but as a society, we are all paying the price for what I've heard others simply call "stubbornness". Interestingly, I'm hearing and observing  that it's frequently the smaller growth companies and new business startups that are now beginning to take the risks and do the hiring. The largest companies, while not - not hiring -  are typically still procrastinating - waiting - and leaving their money sitting in the bank.

Where do see the jobs coming from? Who do you see doing the hiring?  Where is business investing?

Remember what the all the company recruitment brochures and annual reports used to boldly declare:  "People, Our Most Important Asset"?

What's happening out there? I'd like to hear from recruiters, bosses,  the employed and the unemployed. Will you share with me and my readers?

Some People . . .

"Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved."
