Minnesota Re-Opens for Business
After 20 days and countless frustrations, the Minnesota Legislature and Governor Mark Dayton came to an agreement yesterday that brings some semblance of order back to Minnesotans. The 20,000 plus laid off state employees are back at work today. And . . . the state Workforce Centers are doing a renewed and brisk business.

Minnesota State Government Shutdown?
MN Governor & Legislature still at odds. State "mis"government shutdown very real possibility at midnight tonight.
State Workforce Centers likely to close. BUT - judge rules unemployment checks will still go out.

Focus On Accomplishments
Why will someone hire you? Because you have convinced them they Need You. The best way to do this - in emails, letters resumes or interviews - is to show them how well you have done what they want. Past performance (in job search) is the best predictor of future performance.
Today most everyone who interviews uses the techniques associated with "Behavioral Interviewing". Here the interviewer asks you to give specific examples of what you did in a particular situation. Not what you might do, what you actually did. They are seeking proof of performance. You must be prepared to - not only - include specific accomplishments in your resume, you must be prepared to tell the stories associated with them. Most importantly tell them how you successfully addressed or solved the problem or situation.

You’ve Lost Your Job #3 – Know Yourself
What do you do? What do you do well? What do you do best? What do enjoy most? What do want to do more of? When? Where? These are all questions that everyone should be asking themselves as they prepare for their job search. Each question can have a multitude of responses. Sometimes what you do well - or even best - is simply what you've got the most experience doing. Not necessarily something that you'd choose to over again - and again.
If you haven't taken the time to think about what your future should look like,, how can you expect to convince a hiring manager that you are the best candidate to fill their need? I call this the Career and Self Discovery process. There are any number of career books and online resources with exercises and assessments to help you sort thorough this process. If you want to "wake up and go to fun" in the morning, you'll need to spend some time fully exploring your your interests, likes, skills, knowledge and abilities.
Career and job search assessments, (personality, interests, behavioral /management style, values, career suggestions ) can help you not only better understand yourself, they can also give you incredible insights into how others see you. Armed with these insights, you will be much better prepared to interview and to develop a resume that not only meets the needs of the hiring authority: you'll be better able to help him or her truly understand you and your value.
